The region’s soils are often heavy clay or clay-loam, which creates a paradox: clay holds moisture when wet but can become rock-hard and water-repellent when it dries out, making drought stress worse rather than better.

Many homeowners value beautiful, but low-maintenance landscaping, and with good reason. The less your garden relies on supplemental watering, the less your plants, trees, and shrubs are affected during dry spells. The goal of everything below is to build that independence into your landscape before you need it.
